Question
Hello there, My husband and I are looking for another dog (I guess 4 kids and a dog isnt enough lol). We currently have a pit mix Ruca and she is a house dog. I was looking for another pit bull (i love them!) but am kinda scared as to what kind of new dog to bring home (age wise). She is good with other dogs but thats outside of the home not sure how she will react to a new dog on her grounds. I know I want a male since my dog is female but that is about as far as Ive come to making a decision. We are more leaning towards a new pup cuz My husbands friend breeds pits and wants to give us one but Im not sure if that would be a better idea than adopting a grown dog. There is no room for error and I want to make the right decision for both my family and Ruca. You help is needed and greatly appreciated!

Answer
Your are right about the male.  It may have a lot to do with her age.  Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.

A younger dog may fairly soon decide it is great fun having a new playmate.  I am surprised how tolerant a year old may be of a young puppy.
