Question
I read one of your answers regarding this very topic and was surprised to learn that I had been feeding my dog the cheapest quality brand food (Purina, science diet etc.). No wonder my dog never seemed interested in eating his food. He is a Chihuahua and weighs 3lbs 10oz, yet I feel he is very thin and my husband has begun to feed him table food which I am not in agreement with but he does seem to really like it and even shows signs of weight gain. So my question is if he must eat table food I am sure it can be healthier than the one that my husband is giving him such as fried chicken or hot dogs! I was actually thinking of giving him boiled chicken breast with small amounts of rice does this seem like it is healthy or am I totally off base her????? also which fruits are safe for my Chihuahua??? appreciate the help!!!!

Answer
Most Chihuahuas will eat all they need and more.  Check http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  If it is too thin by that standard, I would talk to the vet.  It could have a tape worm or something.

Forget whatever whoever you originally asked said about the common brands.  I know at least one of the ''experts'' here actually has a website where you can buy premium products.  You think she is giving objective advice?

The rare healthy dog that isn't eating enough to maintain good body condition is the one case I suggest more expensive food.  Purina is an excellent food, but dogs do have to eat more of it.  Science Diet, Iams, Pro Plan, etc are reasonably good foods.  Most healthy dogs will eat all they need of them.

Do try discourage your husband from feeding table food.  Fried chicken and hot dogs have high fat and can wreck a dog's pancreas.  The damage doesn't show up until it is too late.

Remember, it is very easy to over feed small dogs, and most of the Chihuahuas you see are overweight.
