our 2-3 year old dog is all of a sudden pooping on the floor and on beds and we let her out constantly but she is still doing it and we think it has somthing to do wth our new puppyand our duaghters leaving is this true?

Hi Douglas,

Thank you for writing to me about your dog's sudden behavorial changes.  

The first thing that must be ruled out is the medical.  I suggest that you have your dog examined by your vet, icluding some bloodwork for her thyroid, as well as check have her stools checked for worms and parasites, including giardia.

In the meantime, it's crucial that you start puppy housebreaking so that whatever is causing this episode not become a fixed habit.

If your dog has been through recent emotional trauma, give her some Rescue Remedy.  Place 12 drops in her water bowl and rub some on her gums a few times a day.  You can also discuss doggie xanax with your vet, until things settle down.  Dogs will suddenly poop and pee when under great stress and experiencing anxiety.  Show her a lot of love and attention.  Take her for her own special walks and do not allow the new puppy to harass her.  Be in charge.  Control how much the puppy is allowed to play with your older dog.  It's not fair for the puppy to be annoying.  Give the puppy lots and lots of exercise and play time with other puppies if at all possible.
