Question
My dog is in heat and we were going to take her to the stud dog tomorrow.  Her discharge was red, but now it has a brown tinge to it.  Have we missed her fertile period??

Answer
Missy,
I can't tell that way.  If you count the first day she started to bleed, then go eleven days, that should be her fertile time.  You should breed her the eleventh and the thirteenth days.  Then you count 63 days from the first breeding and you will get an approximate date (of one to two days) of when she will have them.   Does that help you?  Usually they are fertile when the red blood stops and a lighter pink is the color.   when they are brown that is usually near the end.  The other way to know is when she is the most swollen.  You can still try to breed her, she probably won't let the dog breed her if she is not ready.
