Question
Hey there. I have a question.  I have a 6 month old mix female puppy who has had pretty much liquid stool since Sunday. I  put her on boiled chix and rice and called the vet. They said to watch her and if she started showing signs she was sick to bring her in.  She is eating, drinking and playing but she still has runny stool. I brought a sample to the vet yesterday and it was clear no worms.  This morning when I took her out she as she was going it was like she was straining and when it came out the first part of it was dark brown almost black and than the liquid followed which was a light brownish color. We have an appointment tonight but I was wondering what could this be?? Thanks for you help.

Answer
Could be coccidia. Which is a parasite, and they should've checked her when they did a stool sample. Might not have though. If that's what it is they will likely prescribe albon and metronidazole. It'll clear up pretty quickly. With the other behavior that you're describing, I doubt it's anything like parvo,. ecoli or campy although it could be the early stages of the last two. There's always a possibility that they missed a parasite in the initial stool sample Sometimes after they have runny stool it's hard to find the little monsters in there.  Have you changed her food or water lately? That will stress their systems and cause upset tummy as well.  Remember, you can give her immodium, and plain yogurt as well, as both will help with the runny poo.
Let me know how she's doing
