Question
I have a 12 year old Sheltie that paces around most of the night and tries to get on our bed.  Has never happened before until about 6 months ago.  Happens 6 out of 7 nights.  Can I give her something to get her through the night peacefully?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Your Vet could prescribe a mild tranquilizer.  Benadryl can be given to dogs and will act as a mild sedative.  If you do this, be sure to buy the PLAIN Benadryl, not the kind for colds or anything else. Use only the pill form, not the liquid as it contains too much alcohol for a dog.  Here is a dosage chart:
For dogs under 30#, give 10 mg ever 3-4 hours
30-50#, give 25 mg every 3-4 hours
over 50# give 50 mg every 3-4- hours.
It is highly advisable to check with your Vet before giving over the counter meds, ESPECIALLY if your dog is on other meds.  It could cause a bad reaction.

Thank you and God Bless,
Becky
