re: worms in water

I live in Illinois, the worms are alive, the bowl is inside and they are only about as long as a dime and as small, round, and thin as a paperclip wire.

My best guess is that they are some kind of fly or mosquito larvae.  There are different types of flies as well as mosquitos that lay their eggs in water where they hatch and live during their larval stage.  If you do not already I suggest changing the water daily to eliminate the chance that your pets are drinking it.
