Dogs diet

Question
Hi.  I have a 12 year old Cocker Spaniel and he has recently been diagnosed with elevated liver enzymes.  He has been taking Denosyl and Ursodiol for about 45 days now.  Within the past couple of weeks he's not eating OR just doesn't like the food I have been feeding him.  It's Lamb & Rice from Flint River Ranch, so pretty healthy.  I tried adding wet food, water etc., but he's just not happy.  A friend of mine told me to try cooking chicken breast, brown rice & cottage cheese as his new diet.  What do you think?  if so, how much should I feed him.  Thanks! Marc

Answer
Hi Marc;
When one of my senior dogs needed a special diet because of a high liver count, the Veterinarian wanted her to be on a low protein diet.
I cooked chicken and rice for her.
I used the whole chicken, but I skinned it, simmered it in enough water to cover it, strained out the chicken and chilled the broth so I could revove all the fat that cooked out of the chicken, then I chopped the chicken, cooked the rice in the broth, and fed her mostly rice with a little of the chicken in it.
I also added carrots and potatoes, and a little celery to flavor it, and to give the dog other nutrients she needed.
I would ask your Veterinarian how much of the chicken to give daily, and what else to put in the stew, also ask him/her about other vitamin suppliments.
I question the cottage cheese because of the fact that it also contains protein, and is a milk product that could possibly cause constipation or diarreah.
