Question
my dog is 4 yrs old, fixed and for the most part very healthy. shes a little over weight but we've been working on it. anyways today my mom noticed a little blood in her urine. then little while later after exercise she peed again but more blood and bright not dull colored. she tried peeing a few minutes after and nothing came out. im familar with uti's and dogs. when she as a pup she had a few them. nothing since then though. she hasn't acted any different then normal. her appetite is still good, playful and loves to drink her water... ihave given her 2 cephalexin 500mg tabs tonight( i always have them on hand for her from my vet due to her having sensitive skin) just to cover any possible uti. if you have any sugestions and can help... please help.

thanks,
ashlie

Answer

Hi Ashlie,

Your dog needs to be examined by a veterinarian to confirm the UTI (at least that's what I would do, if I saw blood in my dog's urine). Blood in the urine often may appear of a pinkish tint because it mixes within the urine altering its color. When the blood appears bright red (as you said it was) it is usually not mixed in the urine but rather coming from the vaginal or rectal area.

If you want to treat your dog with Cephalexin, and hope that you've diagnosed your dog correctly, that's entirely up to you. A veterinarian will usually prescribe 10mg of Cephalexin for each pound of the dog's weight, with the dosage administered twice a day.

Best of luck,

Patti
