excessive licking

Question
hi, i just adopted a dog from a shelter 2 months ago. He seems to be in good health overall. When I first got him, he was rubbing his back side on the rug and trying to bit his rear end. I had him treated for fleas and had his anal sacs expressed. I also switched his diet to Nutro lamb and rice (no corn). It seems to have helped, but lately, he's been obsessively licking an area on his right leg (near the joint) to the point where it's now raw and bright pink. Any suggestions on what it could be and how I could treat it?
THanks so much, beth

Answer
Sounds like a hot spot.  So much for the benefits of Nutro.  With most of such problems I see here, people are feeding Nutro or other highly rated chows.  It could just be that is what most of the people here are feeding.  Maybe Nutro is as good as anything.  Since you are feeding lamb, stick to it.

Clean the spot with peroxide and apply a cortisone cream.  If it isn't healing up by the first of the week, see the vet.
