Two dogs not getting along well.

Question
Hi, I have a 7 year old beagle that I owned for said years. He is usually shy about other dogs getting near him. My father brought home a 10 month old Samoyed a couple days ago. The first two days were ok, they seemed neutral of each other. Then the third day, things went wrong. I went out to feed my beagle and Samoyed. I fed my beagle first, because he didn't eat for awhile. Then as he was about to eat, the other dog came in and took the food. My beagle just went up to sniff the food but the Samoyed bit him in the nose (just a defense bite). After that, whenever my beagle wanders into his "territory", he chases him off. My beagle backs away. They already know that I'm the boss, but my Samoyed knows he's next in command. Is there a way I can get them to get along?

Also, another question, is it just my Samoyed that likes the dog food, because he eats very, very fast, or is it because he's very hungry. He eats at similar times with my beagle, but my beagle doesn't eat much.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Some dogs are very eager eaters even if over fed.  Kept lean as is healthy, and they inhale their food.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  The Samoyed is large enough that it is really better off if you are feeding it the same adult chow as the Beagle.

There are not one, but 2 easy, tested, effective ways to control rapid eating. You can spread the food out on a cookie sheet or something. Some of my friends just throw it on the floor of the crate. You can put large rocks in the food dish, much to big to swallow. Either way, the dog can't gulp down one big mouthful after another.

I have less help on the getting along.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. When we have had 2 dogs in the house, I have stood between them while they ate.  With them mostly being Labs,  It never took that long for at least one to finish, and then I would take it out of the room and close the door.
