Question
Hi Kati,
Thank you so much for your advice.  We took her to a different vet and it turns out she has small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).  (Do you know anything about this?) They do not know how she got it but she is now on Tylan and we gave her another dewormer called Strongid...so we'll see how everything works out.  She doesn't really have the diarrhea anymore.  She is still on the chicken and rice diet.  I'm scared to start changing her food again :(  As for the skin allergy, I bought a hypoallergenic oil to put on her after bathing her.  If I notice she is beginning to get the hives on her back I cover her in the oil and it seems to work...But I'll definitely try out what you recommended.
Again thank you so much,
Natalie

Hello Kati,

I don't know if you would be able to answer my questions but I'm sending it to everyone just in case...

I don't know what to do anymore...I have a 19 1/2 week old pit mix
puppy. We got her when she was 8 weeks old from a friend who own her
mother, father, and one of her sisters.  My puppy, Diamond, is the only one
out of the litter that has been to the vet over 5 times in the past 2
1/2 months.  She has had diarrhea on and off.  The only time she does not
have it is when she is on medicine.  We have changed her food several
times (Beneful, Science Diet, Nutrimax, Eukanuba low residue, and now
prescription diet allergy free) and has done the bland diet several times
as well (while on this the diarrhea stops as well).  Have you seen any
puppies that have had ongoing diarrhea like this?  We just took her out
of the vet she was in and are bringing her to an animal hospital
instead.  They are starting her off with vitamin b shots to see if it will
help her (he said that some puppies may be born with a deficiency in
this).
My second question has to do with skin allergies.  We have used Perfect
Coat Tender Care puppy shampoo twice and both times she broke out in
hives all over her body which must itch her (she scratches and bites at
it).  We took her to the vet and once again they gave us medicine for it
and told us to bathe her only once a month.  So we went without bathing
her for a month.  A couple of days ago we went to Petsmart and
purchased efa Hylyt soap free hypoallergenic shampoo in hopes that she would be
okay.  Yesterday we noticed she began to get the hives once again on
the sides of her body.  This morning I noticed it is spreading all over.
I called Petsmart and they said they have never had puppies come in
that were allergic to the hypoallergenic shampoo.  The hospital is closed
today so we cannot bring her in.  She is my first dog and I did not
grow up around dogs so as you can see I am at a complete loss and have
spent the past few days crying about the whole situation.
Please let me know if you know anything about this...hope you can help
me or at least let me know if you have heard of this happening before.
Thank you so much, Natalie

Thanks for your question.  I can tell you really care for this little girl you have done so much for her already my hats off.  My Saint Bernard had loose stools  for about 4 weeks and we put him on Eukanuba intestinal formula prescribed by our vet and that helped tremedously.  He had whip worm and also got treated for that too.  For the skin condition I would use a puppy shampoo.  Go to drfostersmith.com and in the search box type in puppy shampoo.  That is what I use at my salon and I have never had a puppy react to it.  Its very mild.  Also you could try kids shampoo too.  The baby shampoo will do the same thing.  Im sorry you have been so stressed about thing just take things day by day and dont let it get to you.  Keep her on her medicine if that is whats helping her.  And if you notice her in pain or stressed out,  call your vet and demand that they let you know whats going on because you are getting tired of the frequent vet visits.  Hope this helps mail me back and let me know.

Answer
Hello again and thanks for the nice reply.  Yes I know bits and peices about SIBO.  As the matter of fact I recieved a puppy myself that had the same thing.  Once again you are doing thing right thing with keeping her on the same food it is not good to keep changed the food and I understand your concern for her skin condition.  Now about SIBO.  This is caused from when they are a puppy and getting too much milk.  Pit bulls usually have around 7-10 puppies per liter  so when she only had 2 her body was probably ready to feed more, thus the 2 puppies were getting more thent they needed.  Now I have a ? for you.  Is her growth normal for her age?  Is she maturing like she normally should?  If not then besure you are giving her a fat supliment to help with nutrition.  I hope this helps feel free to mail me back with any other ?'s or concerns.
