Question

Yaiya
We have a Queens land healer and black lab mixed. Any time someone comes over, she will be overly friendly and just wants to lick them. She'll bark anytime she hears a car honk or if someone is just walking down our sidewalk. She is 4 years old, and when we first adopted her, we were told she would grow out of the "excitement" by 1 or 2 years.
Can you give me any advice on maybe how to stop her from showing too much affection towards people?
Thank you........rrlatinman.

Answer
Hi Ray,

Yaiya looks like most of the dogs here in Southeastern Utah!Lab/heeler crosses are a really nice mix!

Simply, without teaching an alternative behavior incompatible with that forward greeting she won't out grow a darn thing.

Teaching her to go to a spot when people come over will take time as she has had awhile to develop the habit but not impossible. Consider a Manners Minder, it's a remote controlled treat dispenser very handy for what you need.

If you can give her an activity to last even a few minutes before she greets (like going to her dog bed) then she will greet calmer.
