Question
I've been hearing allot about Glucosamine and its affects for dogs with hip problems.   My dog a Landseer is currently on Metacam and I also give her Glucosamine at the same time.

Thanks

Answer

Hi Martine,

Some people swear by Glucosamine, others don't see a lot of improvement. It helps to begin Glucosamine before there is significant joint damage. A glucosamine supplement should also contain chondroitin, and if possible "MSM" (Methylsulfonylmethane). Luckliy, it's easy to find all of these substances in one pill or liquid supplement. These supplements need to be given daily for at least a month before you may see it's benefits. Also, glucosamine and chondroitin (as well as MSM) do nothing to relieve pain, so you'll need to provide something for pain. Your dog may never be completely weaned off of pain relief medication, but the glucosamine supplement may make it possible to use less.

Another supplement to consider along with the glucoamine, is an Omega 3 Fatty Acid supplement.
Omega 3's can help decrease painful inflammation in joints. A positive side effect is that essential fatty acids can also help improve the luster and shine of your dog's hair, skin and coat. Like the glucosamine (and other "nutraceuticals") Omega 3's need to be given daily for at least a month before you might see some improvement.

Be sure your dog's primary bed is in a warm draft free place, look for special orthopedic bedding such as firm "egg crate" padding, that gives the muscles extra cushioning.

Diet has an affect on many different health issues including those that lead to joint pain. Being overweight is unhealthy for any animal, so it's important that your dog stays at a healthy weight at this point of his life.  Excess pounds only add more pressure to the inflammation and aching muscles that the dog experiences. Simply cutting back on the amount of treats that the dog receives and more carefully monitoring the foods that are purchased can make a big difference.

If your dog is able to take slow daily walks, that can be very helpful. Low impact exercise regiment will help increase blood flow through the joints and reduce inflammation. Let your dog set the pace, or talk to your vet about how much exercise to give your dog.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck!
