separation anxiety/cage training

Question
I just adopted a 2yr old jack russell terrier/min pin mix.  He is a very sweet and loving dog and while I am home, he is already housetrained.  I also have a 14yr old Shiba Inu.  My problem is that I am trying to cage train the new dog.  My shiba has free run of the house all day and never has accidents.  So I have tried all the cage training tips ie:  starting out with 5 min., treats, leaving only enough room for him to stand up, turn around, etc.  At night time, he does very well and will sleep all night as long as the kennel is by my bed.  But during the day, he cries and barks all day.  He also is chewing the metal and has cut his lip open from chewing on the door.  He also almost always has an accident in the cage even if he did his business before going into the cage.  I took him to the vet and she said that I might have to do an alternative method because he is ruining his teeth by chewing on the cage.  I have a gate and tried to leave him in a room but he jumped over the gate and got out.  What should I do?

Answer
Good Evening Tammy;

Well the problem is that your Jack Russell/pin mix feels that he is being punished.
When you crate train a dog, you have to keep him separated from the area the other dogs are in.
At this point, the only thing to do is to put both dogs in crates, and let them face each other while you are gone. This way each dog will not feel slighted.
Now, that he thinks he is being treated differently, it will take awhile for him to calm down, as he thinks that he is being taken away from the "Fun" so to speak, and the other dog has the right to run the house...He is correct in his thinking!
So, to start over, each dog has to be in their own area, separated from each other to control their "Potty" habits, and work individually to "Praise" and work the routine all over again.

Otherwise, you will never have a Cohesive household.
One always will get their feelings hurt.

The only other way is to get another Exercise Pen about 4 feet high so he cannot jump it, and then cord him off from the other dog when you cannot watch him.

Or, buy a Portable Kennel (6 feet high), and set it up in the garage on newspapers, and then keep him going on the newspapers until he figures out that is his "Potty area"...again, Praise, and Repeat, repeat, repeat.

These  are the only other alternatives I can think of to get away from him almost destroying himself!

Talk again, after you give it a try, and let me know how things work out!

I will be able to help you again, anytime.

Best wishes,
And, do send in your feedback to the site as well with a rating, as it would be most appreciated!
