Dogs peeing on area rug

Question
Please tell me how I can stop my dogs from peeing on the area rug or if there is a dog proof area rug you are aware of. I have a pekinese 5, maltese 4 and a silky terrier 12 and they are inside dogs. Please help with any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
You may need to take several steps.  If the rug is washable, wash it using an enzyme odor eliminator.  Otherwise, spot clean it with one.  You could try treating it with the sprays meant for outdoor shrubs found with the lawn and garden supplies.

This could also be a matter of rivalty.  Each one want to be the last to have marked it.  Spay/neutering any not already done would help.  You then need to claim your place as leader.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
