New pup and older dog together

Question
We have a 2 1/2 year old bichon/maltese that we adore, we just brought home a yorkipoo pup who is also a wonderful little dog.  Our problem is our older dog is scared to death of the pup.  Both are males who we were hoping would play and enjoy each other, but our adult dog is to frightened to get off the couch.  Any suggestions or advice is really appreciated.  Thanks.

Answer
Heather,

Start by training them in the same area. They will have to be leashed for control. Allow your older dog to be in an area with you while someone else walks in the new dog. As SOON AS the new pup is in view of the old one make sure you praise and treat your older dog with a good reaction. Take the new dog away after a very short time as to not overwhelm your old pup. Repeat making the time the new dog stays in the vicinity longer and closer to the old dog. The better the behavior the bigger the reward. This will help your older dog understand that good things happen when the new dog is in the area. and the best things happen when he's really close.

Let me know how it all works out.
