My Standard Poodle Puppy

Question
I recently asked about my puppy having potty problems in his kennel after my work schedule changed. Once my schedule went back to normal, he was still having problems.  Now it seems that any time I put him in his kennel, he poops and pees.  I have given him the Kong toy with peanut butter, and it seems to help him when I am leaving for the day, but how can I stop the potty accidents before they get worse?  I don't believe that the breeder kept him in a kennel inside, but I believe he was kept in a wire cage outside during the day for 10-12 hours.  How do I break this vicious cycle?

Answer
I find it difficult to refer back to old questions here.  I am sure I cautioned you on leaving him more that 4-5 hours at a time.  It is difficult undoing poor care by ''breeders''.  I get many very basic questions here from people wanting to do breeding.  I am sure those people have no clue about how or why to keep puppies clean before they go to their homes.  Just keep them outside where the smell won't bother you.

I am not sure I have much more to give you on stopping it.  Even well cared for puppies will have a few accidents over night or if left half a day.  I cope with that by using a grid in the crate at first.  ''Skip the
bedding. At first it gets wet, and later it can be chewed into choking
hazards. A wire grid in the bottom will help keep the puppy up out of
accidents at first. They are available with the crates, but expensive and hard to find. A piece of closely spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper. I am now using a plastic vegetable bin with plenty of holes drilled in the bottom. It helps block off part of the crate for the smaller puppy.''

Perhaps in time, he will learn to prefer a clean, dry crate if you make it possible.
