Question
My dog has a problem with new food and I read something about including pumpkin in her diet. She is 9 and is spayed. Is adding pumpkin a good idea?

Answer
Hi Michelle,

Pumpkin helps by absorbing the liquid in the system and adds fiber to help firm the stool. It's used both in cases of diarrhea, and constipation. Canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) works fine. Use small amounts only, as too much can actually lead to loose stools.
Depending on how big your dog is, all she may need is a teaspoon or two in her food.

If you switched dog foods gradually, over a period of 5-7 days, and your dog's stomach troubles began when you started after she's been on the new food, then there's the possibility that she just doesn't tolerate the new food very well. The best food for your dog, is the food she thrives on. You might consider another dog food.

If you'd like to get back to me with your dog's specific problems, I might be able to suggest something besides pumpkin that could help your dog.

Best of luck,
Patti
