eating green grass frequently

Question
What would cause my dog to eat green grass at every opportunity, often many times a day?  She is 1.5 year old Aussie shepherd-heeler-collie mix.  Often she will also nibble on the livestock's grass hay.  Is it safe for her?

Answer
Hi TJ,  Eating grass is normally a sign of nerves and/or their stomach bothering them which can also be from nerves.  You have to be careful with livestock hay because it can have foxtails in it, and if she ingests that it can puncture her stomach.  Foxtails can do a lot of damage to a dog.  Aussies & heelers as well as shepherds are all really nervous breeds (as most herding dogs are) so you are basically triple dosed on a bundle of nerves.  Hope this helps,
