cats and dogs

Question
I have a 1 year old yorkie.  I just had to put my cat of 18 years to sleep. Rosie my dog has never been alone.    I want to get another cat , should i get and adult or kitten? I have had cats in the past that have killed small animals.

Thank you for writing to me.  Condolences on the loss of your cat.

Based on your experience and possible anxiety level, I would opt for a kitten as a companion for Rosie.  On the other side of the coin, you would have to monitor your dog's behavior and not assume that she would be gentle with a kitten nor might a kitten be gentle with her.  You would therefore not be able to leave them alone unless you were in the room, at least until the kitten grows into an adult cat.

I hope that everything works out for you and that Rosie finds a loving companion to keep her company.
