Question
My akita is about 8 months old and just received her period.  I plan to let her have babies.  When is she ready to have them? Also is there anything special I can do to make her more comfortable while she is on?

Answer
Hi Shanti,

Just as it's best when a human teenager doesn't have babies, the same is true of dogs. Female dogs should not be bred before their second heat cycle, at that point they'll be emotionally mature, fully grown, and will be better mothers.

Before breeding your dog, you should have her examined by your veterinarian to ensure she is free from genetic conditions such as hip dysplasia and Thyroid issues (both common to the Akita breed),  which could be passed on to her puppies. Only sound specimens of any breed, should be bred.

By being a reputable breeder, your puppies will be worth more, and you''ll be doing the right thing by breeding for healthy puppies. You can read more, here:

Best of luck,
