Question
QUESTION: hi nancy,
i am looking for a pup.i want the breed to be less prone to diseases..here in my place we only have some breeds like lab, rottweiler, german shepards, pompoms, dash hound, dalmatian, doberman.so i want to choose a breed that is not very prone to disease.please help..

ANSWER: can you tell me more about your lifestyle?  do you have time to walk a dog a couple of hours a day or to take him on runs of 5 miles or more.  Or do you need a dog that pretty much gets his exercise around the house.   Will the dog be alone a lot?  Do you have small children? babies, teens?

Answer
Hi K,
It is not so much what breed, but where you get it.  If you are getting a dog from a pet store, you are at risk of indiscriminate breeding, BUT you are also at risk from breeders who over breed, too.
If you want a shepherd for example. Buying one from a reputable breeder IN GERMANY where they absolutely are careful about hip problems gives you a better chance at good health.  Buying a smooth fox terrier from Canada, or norther states is good.

Here are some dogs I recommend:
Miniature Schnauzer
smooth fox terrier
west highland terrier
glen of imaal

***** the above dogs must be kept FLEA FREE AND ON A HIGH FAT DIET WITH OMEGA 3 CAPSULES.  IF YOU DO THESE TWO THINGS, YOU WILL HAVE NO SKIN PROBLEMS

Irish setter
Doberman (big boned only)
Standard Poodle   (needs hair cutting and daily combing  long life until 20)
German shepherd  (from Germany, already tested for hips)

boykin
Brittany spaniel
shiba enu
Maltese (constant COMBING)
miniature pinscher

No one can guarantee a dogs future, but these tend to be sturdy breeds that I have been in contact with over the years.   Any wiry coated dog needs a high fat diet, which is something vets don't know, but I have raised them for years at different times in my life.
