Pregnant papillon??

Question
Hi Patt, :)

My name is Kristin and I am hoping that my Papillon has been bred. The first day of her season was the 1st of January and so I have figured that if she were bred, that she could at the earliest have them on the 8th of March. She was with a male during her whole season. Now Paps usually have small litters, 1-3, and so far, she doesn't look or feel pregnant. We weighed her today and will weigh her again in about a week to see if there is a weight gain, but just tonight, she has been acted very unusual. She has been mounting the male dogs and the male dogs have have taken an interest in her.  I have never seen her display such behaviour before. Would this be an indication that she is pregnant and that the hormones are just making her act in such a way, or would this be a sign that she isn't bred? How long is it until they start to, "look pregnant?" Also, would you happen to know of any excellent breeding books out there?? I have searched and have red several articles on the internet, but they don't go into much detail. But anyway, thank you so much for your time and help, I know how time consuming this can get. I use to be an All Expert for guinea pigs! But thanks again,

Kristin

Answer
Hi Kristin
She should not of been with the stud so long, did anybody witness the two ties, how long were they etc.?
You should only breed twice  I breed the 14 and 16 days for better larger litters.  This time however Gino bred Sasha on the 11 and 13 days.  His ties are some thirty minutes, the girls get tired of standing so long.
I can tell if my girls are bred within 3 weeks without any xrays ever.
They eat good at first, then now they slack down as they are filling with pups.  It does not sound like she is bred to me.  Her first time, they rarely just make it easy for the stud.  I do hope somebody helped and marked down the ties, if any.,?
She should of been put on puppy brand of food after breeding up to and after whelping, this is more protein for nicer pups, better milk and keep the bitch from dropping off while feeding pups.  Plenty of fresh water and daily exercise if necessary during pregnancy.
The old book I had of my sisters we cannot buy anymore, I copied alot out of it.  Go to www.amazon.com and type in dog breeding.  There must be books out there with good illustrations of photos.
Being I bred horses for years, dog breeding just came natural.  She should definately be gaining and filling up in her teets now.
You only breed after the first day of any speck of blood, count as day one, then count up to day 11 try her and on till they are out on day of 21.  They usually take after the tenth day, but I breed late on mine and found better pups and larger litters.  The heat last 21 days, so first week is swelling, then drip and the going out week is the one they are bred.  U must keep a calendar and mark all things down and never keep a bitch with a stud, just long enough for breeding and he leaves or is penned up.

Kind Regards
patt
