pug in heat

Question
Hi, My pug, Lilu is in heat and I was considering breeding her with another pug.  I have never done this before so don't know what to expect.  When I was young I was always around when my cats had kittens, but is this the same thing?  I have read some disturbing things online about what to expect, like death of puppies or even death of my beloved pug, and exorbitant costs.  I am new to the area and don't even have a vet for my dog yet.  Can I give the vaccines to the pups myself?  If so, where do I get the meds?  What is the likelihood of some complications?  She is 4 1/2 yrs old and has never had puppies.  Is she past her prime?  Would she be in danger if I let her have puppies?

Answer
Hi Amy,  Pugs can be difficult to breed as it is common for them to need cesarian sections, so it is good practice to get familiar with a vet before the dog gives birth to prepare for the possibility of her having to have surgery.  She is not past her prime, but she isn't getting any younger.  Yes you can vaccinate the pups yourself, and can purchase vaccines online or through a local feed store most of the time.  The danger you face is if she has complications and needs a cesarian.  Hope this helps,
