Question
Hi. I've a small breed female dog. She is about 6 1/2 yrs old, has never been mated. She's had normal menstrual cycles. This time around, she seems to have lost appetite and is not so keen on playing. Is this normal? Would appreciate if you could let me know. Thanks.

Subodh

Answer
Hi Subodh,

Hormones definitely can influence an intact animal. Almost any behavior change which occurs during a females heat cycle, can be normal. Most females tend to not show extreme behavior changes, but the changes in behavior seen tend to be consistent for that individual

Since your dog is 6 1/2 years old, you must have noted her behavior during previous heat cycles. If your dog is acting drastically differently now, then you should have your vet examine her. Often the first sign of disease is a change in behavior or personality.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
