determing dog breed best for me

Question
I am a 60 year old female that is semi-retired.  I live on a large lot which is waterfront.  I have two cats that are middle aged.  I have no children at home, but grandchildren that are small and visit several times a year for several days.

I would like to get a small or toy dog.  It is very important that the dog is not hyper and barks a lot.  I also do not want a destructive dog.  My husband is reluctant to get a dog because of bad experience with neighbors dog that are very hyperactive and bark constantly.

Can you suggest a breed?  I have expendable income and have no problem with cost of dog or grooming needs.  It would be a well loved "baby" if I can find the right match.   I would prefer not to have a puppy but would take one if necessary.

Answer
A shi Tzu would be my first choice as they are VERY laid back dogs and are known for tolerating Children as well as other animals, they do need regular grooming but you stated that wasn't an issue, also they are not yappy

Pugs are also great and gentle with kids and are laid back, and don't tend to bark, although some snore

Boston Terriers are also great dogs with children, and tolerate a lot of things as well, but some can be active while others are not, females tend to be calmer in this breed

Poodles are also excellent with children and are not hyper, although some tend to be yappy, but are very smart and easy to train-so this can be trained out of them

A lot of 'toy' breeds aren't good for kids as they are fragile and tend to snap around kids, but the breeds I mentioned are known for being good with kids-a shi tzu I think would be your best choice as they are neither barkers or hyper
