Question
I have a two year old bischon that has been sick since Monday with vomiting and diarrehea.  I brought her to the vet on Wednesday and she got two shots (pepcid and ambicillian) and I had to bring her back in today.  She is slightly dehydrated and everything came back okay.  They did an exray but nothing showed up. They are going to do a barium series now, suspecting that there is a blockage somewhere.  She acts perfectly normal except for vomiting.  Does this sound like a normal course of action for the vet to do?  Thanks for your help.  I am extremely worried about her.

Answer
Hi Nancy,

Doing a barium series of x-rays really REALLY enhances what will show up in the x-ray.

You can see actual x-ray pictures of a dog both before and after barium is introduced here:

Vomiting patients in some cases require an extensive work-up. To me, proceeding with the barium series of x-rays sounds like the right thing to do, you might agree after visiting the website I listed above.

Best of luck,
Patti
