English Bull Dog Neutering

Question
I recently purchased a 5 week old English Bull
Dog.  I have the proper papers for him.  I took
him to my vet for an exam to find out if he was
in good condition.  My Vet said that she could
only feel one of his testicals and for that reason
he could not breed properly and needed to be
neutered for his sake.  The vet of the seller of
the dog declares that english bulldog testicals
do not develop until much later and the vet that
I took the dog to should not be able to feel
or see either testical.  Which is telling the
truth, as I paid $1500.00 for this dog and was
looking for the privilege to stud this dog.
What do you say about the situation.

Answer
Hi Jeanne,  Your breeder's vet is right.  Testicles drop between 4-6 months of age, and it is not that uncommon for a dog of any breed to not have both testicles descended before 4 months old.  Sometimes they can be tucked way up in the abdomen.  You shouldn't even really be able to feel them at 5 weeks old.  As far as breeding, any species of animal can breed properly (including humans) with only one testicle.  The danger of leaving one testicle inside a body is that it will die and then the being can get testicular cancer.  That is why it would need to be removed.  If the testicle is not down by the time the dog is 6 months of age, then I would get the dog neutered.   Hope this helps,
