Is my puppy maturing ahead of schedule?

Question

Mr. Fuggle
Hello,

I am a mommy of 3 Pomeranian puppies - 2 boys (Mr. Sparkle & Mr. Fuggle) and 1 girl (Astrid), I also have one other Pomeranian puppy (Beau) who is now turning 6 that is living with my parents overseas (I guess that makes me a mommy of 4 and not 3).  Mr. Sparkles and Mr. Fuggle are brothers while the girl is from a different litter and is 11 days older. However, unlike his brother, Mr. Fuggle looked a bit scrawny but is otherwise a friendly and energetic puppy - it is actually quite hard to tell that they're from the same litter.  I got Mr. Fuggle at exactly 3 months and one of the first things I noticed about him is that he seemed to have shedded most of his puppy hair already.  I was told that most puppies do not change their coat until 4 to 6 months of age and Beau definitely did not change his hair until 4 months, so I'm a bit alarmed that Mr. Fuggle is not only changing coat, but has already lost most of his puppy coat (he's going through the Puppy Uglies already) while Mr. Sparkle still retained most of his puppy coat.  Is Mr. Fuggle maturing way ahead of schedule?  I've attached a photo of Mr. Fuggle for your reference.

Another thing that I found alarming was that Mr. Fuggle is already humping and he does that to my hand when I'm trying to pick him up and to just about anything that moves.  I am unable to tell if this is purely a play or dominance thing but I am concerned about the timing of humping at such an early age (Beau never humped until 2 years of age and he only did that once - Beau was NOT fixed either).  I was told that puppies do not reach sexual maturity until 6 months but in this case, Mr. Fuggle is already changing hair before 3 months of age (way before schedule) so I am not very sure about the reason behind the humping.  Is it possible that he is reaching maturity much faster than most Pomeranians?  How do I tell?  Also, how do I tell that when he is humping his other playmates that it is simply really just humping and NOT penetrating?  I know that one does not have to be sexually active to be able to penetrate, so in this case should I keep him away from the female Pom?  I know that he may not be able to impregnate yet but the fact remains that I simply do not want any sexual acts happening amongst the puppies ...

As for Mr. Sparkle, since he is brothers with Mr. Fuggle, is this also something I need to be concerned about in that he will go through the same type of early maturization?

Would really appreciate any advice in this.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Kou;
I have not heard of Pups ever maturing Too early! But, depending on the genetic backround of each dog, it can definitely work to give the dog a different growth curve!
So, I would not be alarmed with it, just be aware that you will need to watch his attitude.
As the dominant genetics are sure to be there with him showing signs already!
So, I would get him to a class for socialization, and work with him on a leash now, and give him plenty of support, but, also let him know that you are the boss!
Let me know how it goes, and if I can be of assistance in the future, do not hesitate to ask.
Best regards,
Melissa
