Yorkie mix

Question
My daughter and I have a 10 month old shih tzu named Lenox and tow months ago bought a 10 week old female shorkie (yorkie/shih ztu)named Lexi as a playmate. Lexi is now 4.5 months old and is very hyper.  She plays all day and all evening, and will constantly walk around the bedroom in the dark in the middle of the night trying to wake up Lenox to play.  She rarely takes naps and when she does it is only for 10 minutes or less.  Lenox likes to play but he also likes to nap which is impossible for him unless we put Lexi in her "time out" basket.  My question is this:  Does Yorkies not need much sleep?  Our Shih tzu certainly does. Lexi is a 50/50 mix but she doesn't seem to have any shih ztu traits that I can see and her appearance is that of a yorkie. Our shih ztu is very laid-back and very obedient.  The dogs love one another and play very very well together. Both dogs are very spoiled.
Neither dog has ever been crated (they share a small room while we are at work) and sleep in their own beds in my daughters room at night

Answer
Hello!

I have a Yorkie-Silky mix and she does not display that kind of behaviour at all. She loves to sleep!  LOL  It sounds like you have a hyperactive dog, which is common when breeds are mixed. You just never really know what you're going to get. If I were you, I would crate her at night. I know you don't want to do that, but for her own good , you really should. This way, she will get the sleep she needs and so will YOU and Lenox!  It's not cruel to do this as all they are doing is sleeping.  You can still leave her out when you are not home, in the room you have for them.  I think it would really make a big difference if you did this.

God Bless,
Becky
