Question
i have a 1 1/2 yr old puggle and inside her lower lip is a growth that looks like a cluster of little pink cysts. it does not seem to hurt her at all.Do you know what it is and what i should do about it?

Answer
Hi Erin,

Dogs can get acne, it's most often seen chin and lips of young dogs. Perhaps that's what these pimples, or cysts are.

Don't use over the counter acne treatments on your dog. A dog's skin is thinner and more sensitive than a humans. The average product containing benzoyl peroxide for human acne contains 10 percent benzoyl peroxide while the maximum concentration that could be used on a dog is 5 percent. There is a veterinary product called OxyDex that comes in both a gel and shampoo that you could try using.

If these pimples don't go away on their own within a two week period, you should have your dog examined by your vet. There are other diseases that may look similar to acne that need to be ruled out.

Best of luck,
Patti
