i cant get my dog to behave properly

i wonder if you could help me with my 2 year old irish setter. she gets very excited every time she sees people, i've tried to calm her down but she doesn't listen and starts whining when my guests don't pat her. i read in a book that you turn your back to them and only pat them when you are ready to pat them, i have tried this but it doesn't work i feel embarrassed when my guests come over because she gets so over excited and jumps up on people. i have been thinking recently about giving her away but i don't really want to. please help me

Hi Lauren,  She needs to get enrolled in obedience training so that she understands where her place is in the home and how she is supposed to act around people.  She needs to learn commands so that you can control her and have the upper hand on the situation.  You can have people raise their knee everytime she jumps up on them and tell her "no" so that she understands that the behavior is not welcome, but you still need to get her in training so she can understand her place.  Hope this helps,
