Question
Hi, hope you are doing well :)
This may sound pretty weird, but if a dog mates and is neutered before she has had the babies, will she still be able to have the babies? Also does this endanger the pups...? Thanks if you can help -Jen

Answer
Hi Jen,

I'm not really sure what you're asking, so I'll answer this from two angles:

If you are asking about a female dog, who's been "fixed", the procedure is called being spayed. A female dog who's been spayed can not ever have puppies. Her uterus and both ovaries are surgically removed.
If a female dog becomes pregnant and then is spayed, it's the same as having an abortion. The unborn puppies are removed from the female's body, long before they are able to survive on their on. From that point on, the female dog will never be able to get pregnant again.

If you're asking about a male dog who's been "fixed", then that procedure is called being neutered. A male dog who's recently been neutered can still impregnate a female dog (who is not spayed) for about a month after he's neutered. It take that long a time period for his hormone and sperm levels to drop. After that time period he can no longer impregnate a female.

Some dogs, of either gender will engage in mounting behavior which isn't sexual, though it looks like the dogs are "humping". This mounting behavior is about dominance, not sex.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
