Question
With summer around the corner my two Pomeranians have really been battling with the heat. They are often panting and trying to find any piece of cold floor to spread themselves out on. Would it be a good idea to shave their hair short?? We groom them regularly and keep them neatly brushed so the hair is not an issue, but if it is kinder for them to have shorter hair for the summer then I will let the vet give them a good shave. Are their any negative side affects of them being shaved??

Answer
Many do shave their Poms down for the summer. The only disadvantage I can see is that shaving will ruin the coat and color, making it softer and lighter-colored.

Some say that shaving a double-coated breed should never be done as that double coat acts as insulation against the heat, but let me tell you.... miniature schnauzers are also a double-coated breed, and they are MUCH more comfortable shaved. I say, if you can stand the look of shaving that lovely coat off.... go for it!
