Training dogs to take food only from yourself

Question
Greetings again.

Since you have worked closely with wolves, and their hybrids, would you mind terribly if I emailed you a photo of her and see if you can attempt to distinguse what breeds are in her bloodline?

Also, we have been unable to locate a halti-head collar for her...where could we find one?

Thanks,
Amanda

Greetings.

I have heard that there is a way to train a canine to take food that only has your scent on it, or from your hand, to prevent them from being poisoned. However, I do not know the proper term for this, and can't find any information on this training. Can you please help?

On another note, we have an (believed to be wolf/golden retriever mix) 18 month puppy that has developed an odd behavior. When walking with me, she ignores passing cars. However, when walking with my father, she will snarl and growl, bark and lunge, making such a rukus we can hear her a block away. They both return from their walk exhausted...he from battling her, and her from 'attacking' cars. Parked cars do not bother her, only ones moving. Do you have any suggestions for preventing this behavior? She walks on a 6 ft leash, with a choke-collar on (she slips out of normal collars).

Thank you,
Amanda

Hi,  Poison proofing is what that is normally called about training a dog not to take food from a stranger.  You normally need to start this training at a very young age, and it is extremely difficult to teach.  Most of the time you have to use dominance type training to teach a dog this, which I personally don't advocate especially in your situation.  If you really do have a wolf hybrid and you try to dominate that dog, you could have some serious problems.
Also, are you sure you have a wolf hybrid?  A lot of people think they have wolf hybirds, but they have very unique characteristics in their looks and temperment.  They do not act like domestic dogs, and tend to have major problems when kept in family situations.  If you have not met the actual parents, grandparents etc. that were supposedly wolf, I wouldn't call it a wolf hybrid until you have it evaluated by someone who has really worked with wolves.  I personally worked with wolves years ago ahnd have extensive knowledge when it comes to wolf hybrids.  Also, if you own a home, be careful who you tell about the dog being a wolf hybrid as  a lot of home insurance companies will not cover a home if a wolf hybrid lives there.  Now as to the behavior she is exhibiting, It sounds like the retriever part of her is coming out and she is reacting to the movement of the cars.  The may be really aggravating her by their fast movement.  One of the reasons she may not be doing this with you is because she considers you to be the boss.  I would recommend that you get a Halti brand Head Halter to walk her.  It will make it a lot easier for your father to walk her.  You probably should put her through some formal obedience training to get her a little more under control.  I wouldn't use a choke chain to train her since she really pulls, it could eventually damage her trachea.  If you have any more questions, feel free to give me a holler.

Hope this helps,

Dawn

Hi, sure you can send me a pic.  Send it info@a1dogtraining.com.  You can purchase them through a local Petsmart or Petco or online at either one of their websites.  Her size would probably be a 2.  Ignore the sizes listed on the package for the particular breeds, they tend to be wrong.  Most retriever size dogs wear a 2.  I look forward to receiving your pic.
