Question"I am in Britain and have been looking for a cavalier pup for weeks. It seems here in Britain, breeders don't readily screen for mvd or check the eyes of both parents. I am becoming disheartened. Should I let the lack of proof of health, put me off. I really have my heart set on finding a healthy cavalier.";
AnswerHi Fran,
I think you are wise to wait until you find a breeder who has screened her dogs against MVD. From what I have read, 5 out of 10 Cavalier Spaniels will have this. The breed itself is in serious danger. Unless you plan on spending a lot of money on veterinary care, I definitley would not buy a puppy that is not screened for MVD. I know your heart is set on this breed, but maybe you should consider another? I would hate to see you get a puppy and have problems, because even if the parent dogs are free from trouble, that does not necessarily mean the pups won't have problems.
I wish I could be of more help. It is a beautiful breed, and I certainly understand why you want one.
God Bless,
Becky
