hairballs

Question
my dog acts like he has something stuck in his throat and gags, is it possible that a hairball is to blame, and would it possibly make him vomit.  In you opinion should I make a vet appt right away or wait it out as he acts fine the rest of the time.

Hello Amy, Usually dogs do not get hairballs as they do not lick to clean their fur as cats do.  It is quite possible that he may have an obstruction, this only the vet can verify.  Certainly if he continues in this manner for any length of time I would take him to the vet.  Hopefully it is something simple.  But either way you will have an answer.  Good luck, Cindy lou :)
