What has happened to my dog?

Question
Hi,

My dog is 6 years old and epileptic (yes, he has medication for it). Recently however, after his seizure he's been in pain. What happens usually after one of his episodes is that he'll just be panting and act as if nothing happened. But from his second last one, I tried to pick him up but he yelped. He appeared to be in pain, limping and shook despite it not being cold. After about a week though he was walking normally and even jumping so I thought it was just a light sprain or something similar. But then he just had another seizure - and the same thing has happened again! Right now all he can do is lie down or either withstand the pain whilst walking.

I was hoping to get your opinion on what has happened, because I think it's very strange that this would happen twice in a row. Thank you in advance!

Answer

Hi Gabrielle,

I can't say with any certainty what happened to your dog. He may have pulled a muscle during that first seizure and reinsured himself during the second seizure. If your dog appears to be in pain, you need to have him examined by your vet.

If your dog is still having seizures while on medication, you need to discuss this with your vet. Your dog may need to have his medication adjusted. There's a substantial amount of trial and error while the vet figures out the dosage and medication types that work for the specific dog. Keep an accurate record of his seizure activity (date and duration of the seizure) and show it to your vet.

Best of luck,

Patti
