black tummy

Question
I was just wondering if you have ever seen or heard of a name for what my dachshund might have on his tummy. He is a red dachshund and he has a significant black tummy that reaches all the way to his behind and I beleive that it itches him. I did some research and I know there is a name for it but I can  not remember exactly what it is called except that it may be a black sking disease that runs mostly in male dogs.

Hi Alyssa,

The skin turning black is nothing to worry about - when animals skin has chronic inflammation it activates the cells that produce melanin (what gives us a tan or darker skin) and causes the skin to turn black. Often this will go away when the infection or allergy is under control. By itself, the color change is not harmful to your dog in anyway.

You should have your dog see your veterinarian though. The change of skin color with the itch could be a symptom of signs of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). Better safe than sorry.
