Dog is afraid of storms

Is there anything I can do for my 7 lb. Pekingese who is afraid of storms?  This is a pretty recent problem.  (She is 8 y/o) and this began about a year ago.  It is getting worse.  She shakes, paces and pants.  I have heard that Benadryl would help, but I did not know nor how much to give her if so.  I asked my vet, but the answer was "by the time it takes effect, the storm is over."  But if I know they are calling for storms, I could give her a dose.  We literally do not sleep at night if there are storms because of her.  I feel bad for her that I am unable to console her!  Storm season is approaching quickly.  What should I do?
