Question
I have a 12 year old sheltie who has recently been diognosed with heartworm disease. My vet said the safest treatment for HIM would be heartguard although it is a slower process. My cocern is this...my dog has been doing fine up until a couple of days ago when he got very sick on his tummy and couldn't hold down food. The next day he ate quite well but threw it up the following morning.Since that day as well as today he's been hungry but very very picky.I am cocerned because he does not need to loose weight and he's always been such a good eater.Im afraid my dog won't start eating normally again. If he doesn't get back to his old self I know I'll have to take him to the vet again.Do you have any advice you can offer?

Answer
Haley,
Heartworms are a worm spread by mosquitos, if left untreated can kill your dog. Heartguard is generally used as a preventative, vomiting and and food issues can be a problem, I suggest a phone call to your vet for a phone consult as the treatment, and health of your dog is at risk, here. if the vet would like to have a follow up appointment, then this is the best course of action. even the treatment can be a cause of death, a close relationship with your vet is the best way to handle the issue. I would recomend regular visits to your vet while treating this heartworm infestation. as the age and the heartworms are both to be considered in the treatment, a 12 yerar old dog is considered old age, and blood tests and nutrition, need to be considered.
