mini schnauzer behavior

Question
Hello,

I'm very new to mini schnauzers.  I just got one because the previous owner could no longer take care of her.  However, I do not know the previous owners very well.  All I know is that they don't have time to take care of the pup because of their busy schedule and that they would leave the pup in the crate pretty much all day.  I gathered that the pup is about 10 months old and had all the shots (I should be getting the paper works soon).
I'm just wondering about mini schnauzer's behavior because mine pretty much sleeps all day and do not play with any toys that I bought for her (no matter how small or big they are).  She eats about 1 cup of dry pup food every day and is alart.  I take her out for a walk twice a day for 30 - 45min each time.  She's well behaved and it's absolutely a joy to be with her.  My only concern is the sleeping part.  Every time I'm watching TV or folding laundry or just sitting sitting still, she would just lay down next to me and sleep - it doesn't matter if she just woke up, she'll just go back to sleep when I'm not active.  I've only have big dogs in the past so I'm not sure what to think about this mini.
Another thing is that she doesn't drink very much.  She doesn't finish 1 cup of water every day.
Thank you in advance.

Answer
There isn't a lot to do in a crate but sleep, so I am guessing that is what she is used to doing during the day. When you aren't doing anything interesting, she just automatically falls into her old routine. Some dogs are more playful than others, and her disinterest in toys is either just her nature or is again due to her previous lengthy crating. You might try lying on the floor with her and see if you can get her interested in some of the toys if you are playing with them. The walks are GREAT; that at least gets her moving, and exercise is essential to good health.

As to the water, she should probably be drinking more since schnauzers can be prone to urinary problems. I would put warm water in her kibble as that is the easiest way to get her to take up more water.
