red mange

Question
we just got a yorkie puppy that is almost 5 months old. he has just been treated for sarcoptic mange and the vet now says he has red mange as well. he is suggesting to start a mitaban dip this friday, but i keep reading articles saying that the dip isn't safe for toy breeds. i have also read in most articles that if the red mange is only localized, then it will clear up 90% of the time on its own in puppies. the poor pup doesn't even have ANY hair loss or red spots yet. do you think the vet is moving too quickly to try and treat the mites with a dangerous medicine? please help as fast as you can! he has an appointment on friday, and i'm trying to talk the family out of it!!

Answer
Red mange is also called Demodectic mange and it is fairly common.  The mite normally lives in the skin in most dogs, and when the bodies immune system isn't working to it's full potential then the mites get out of control.  Personally, if the dog doesn't have any lesions, then I wouldn't do the Mitaban dip.  Dips are always a risk because it is a harsh chemical.  Demodex can also sometimes be treated with Ivermectin, which is an oral medication.  Your vet may have other reasons for wanting to do the Mitaban dip that I am unaware of, so I would definitely recommend discussing your concerns with your vet and see if they can recommend alternative treatments.
