Question
Karen,

I have a miniature schnauzer that is 2 years old. I have had her since she was 6 months old. She loves people and gets really excited when people come over. She over whelms them with her excitement and if they pet her she pee's all over the place. How can I teach her to calm down when people come over and not pee every where?

My second issue is, I just recently moved in with my boyfriend and when he comes home she will come running to me and hide behind me. If he tries to pet her she hunkers down like he is going to beat her and will pee on the floor. She used to be fine around him but one time she got loose from the house and he caught her and spanked her and told her NO and she has acted this way every since. How can I train her to obey him and welcome him as she does me?

Please Help.

Answer
First of all, if you spank a dog that has run from you when you catch her,,, a dogs thought is
"I'm not going there again I will run because if he catches me, he will spank me"  that is how dogs think...No matter how angry you get when the dog lets you catch them or if they come to you, you give them the biggest praise you can give.  You praise them so they are never afraid to come to you...As you can see, she has not forgotten the spanking   and I hate to tell you...she never will.  She may get to obey him but she will never trust him not to hurt her...Schnauzers have very long memories....The best thing he can do now is to ignore her completely, throw a treat on the floor once in awhile and if she comes up to him to praise her tremendously.
The other part is easy....When people are due to come over, put her on leash.  Before they come in she has to sit and stay.   When people come in they are to ignore her completely (for now).  She is to remain in a sit until the people are settled (of course you are still holding the leash and keeping her in a sit/stay)  When things have settled down and the people are seated, she can go into the room or be released from the sit stay.  However only release her when she is calm.  If she then gets excited and starts to jump all over them, then she is put back into the sit or down and stay until she is so bored that when she is released she ignores them....This doesn't happen in just one attempt...I would say it will take at least 6 months for all of you to get the timing and treatment accomplished...It is not easy when you are learning to do this, but once you do, you will see how well it goes.  This is definitely worth the effort.
