parvo or coccidea

Question
not sure if you could answer this or not.  i currently got a puppy and brought it home to my 2 other dogs.  the new pup was skin and bones and we felt we could give her a good home.  i took her to the vet 2 days after i brought her home to get her shots.  the vet said she had coccidea and gave me medicine.  she was also throwing up several times a day, wont eat or drink, and had severe diareha.  the very next day i took her back to the vet because she seemed to get worse and threw up her medicine as soon as i gave it to her. i went to the same clinic just a different doctor saw her, and the 2nd vet said it was parvo.  she was very ill and weak so we put her down. she looked like she only had a day left to live.  my question is how can i get 2 different diagnosise 1 day apart.  both doctors did a fecal sample test.  can you help me understand????

Answer
Dear Dyanna,

Thank you for writing to me about your precious puppy.  My heart is breaking for your loss.  It must feel so frustrating to have gotten two different opinions and feel perhaps that had you gotten the correct one sooner that it might have made a difference.

Sometimes, just like with human doctors, one vet is better than another.  That is why it is so important to find a vet that you feel confidence in and stay with that vet for the lifetime of your dog.

It is also possible that your puppy had both Coccidea and Parvo, the latter being the most aggressive.

I do believe that you should contact the owner of the clinic you went to and ask that person why you got 2 different opinions. Tell him that you need an explanation because your confidence in his staff has been shaken.  Ask him if he would kindly look into the records and give you his opinion on what happened and why your puppy died?

You might also ask him why the vets didn't suggest that your puppy be hospitalized since she was so ill?

You are entitled to answers.

Try to imagine that in getting your puppy you gave it a chance for a humane departure, something she might not have gotten if she had not been with you.

It is also important that you inform the place you got your puppy from that they gave you a very sick dog.

I hope that you will get another puppy soon, perhaps from a kill shelter where you can save a life and give it a wonderful home.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
