Picking a dog for an elderly man

Question
My dad, 91, recently had to have his dog of 16 years put down and his missing her terribly.  Our family would love to match a new best friend to his needs and need some advice.  We aren't sure if a small older dog would get under his feet (he shuffles) or if a larger older dog (he's had German shepherds, collies, boxers, a chow mix and a sheltie) who would be able to hold his or her own would suit him better.

Answer
Daphne,
I would get him something that could sit in his lap, like a 4/5 year old pomeranian.  They are pretty much aware when a person walks and the older it is the more "foot wise" it should be.
Another options is to go for midsize.  A midsize SMOOTH fox terrier rescue that is around 8 years old would be perfect if it isn't hyper.   Some of them are as calm as can be, you would have to check it out.   These dogs can hold their own and are around 14 to 20 lbs and are loyal to the bone.  Shelties and collies are good, but too much maintenance at his age.  The pomeranian has to be brushed out a lot too, so the smooth fox may be the perfect solution and they are very smart, too.
