Grub infestation

Question
How can I prevent my dog from getting grubs under her skin.  She is a six-month Beagle.  I recently found three cysts on her skin that were draining.  I sheared the areas and with very little pressure, a grub popped out of each cyst.  I have several dogs, yet she is the only one I have ever found grubs on.  I would like to know if there is something I can do to PREVENT this from happening.

Answer
Hi Allison,

Thank you for writing to me about your dog's grub problems.

The first thing to address is the cause of the problem, which would be Moles in your lawn.  There are natural ways to get rid of this situation and you might consider coming up with a plan to eliminate these moles and the grubs.

Simultaneously, you need to build up your dog's immune system.  Switch (slowly so as to prevent diarrhea) to a good brand food such as Merrick.  Give your dog a product called NZYMES: http://www.nzymes.com/articles/dog_skin_hair_problems.htm

Provide a digestive enzyme in her food, such as PROZYME (B-J Wholesale Pet Supplies) and add in MISSING LINK.  Additionally give a small amount of crushed or chopped raw garlic (maybe 1/8 tsp).  You want to make the taste of your dog something grubs will not like.

In order to completely rid your dog of this problem, you need to take a wholistic approach treating both the area and the dog.

Until this condition is under control, walk your dog on a leash away from where there are grubs.

Keep an eye on the sores so they don't get infected.

Finally, speak with your vet about the situation.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
