Question
I suspect my puppy is allergic to alfalfa grass. Twice now she has gotten a hold of the alfalfa grass for my sons rabbit. she swells up real bad in the face and turns very pink. She does not vomit or act sick though. Is it safe to give her a benadryl tablet that I have on hand for my husbands allergies? I just need to know in case it happens again.

Answer

Hi Amy,

The symptoms you've described sound like an allergic response. The best thing would be if you would prevent your puppy access to the alfalfa grass.

Dogs can be given regular strength Benadryl. The dose goes by the dog's body weight, it's roughly 1 mg per pound. So for a 12lb. dog or puppy the dose would be 12 milligrams or about half a 25mg. tablet, and for a 25 pound dog or puppy the dose would be one 25 mg. tablet.

Best of luck,
Patti
