Question
I have a 10 month old amazing pit bull puppy, he is a great dog. I have decided to get him a friend, an 8 week old great dane. I introduced them slowly and cautiously after reading articles about it. Now the Pit is very calm but highly annoyed by the young dane. The young dane, beleive it or not, is very brave and aggressive when it comes to the older pit. At what point should i break up their little quarrels or should i let them be and let them work it out on there own? Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
This bears careful watching.  The first thing is to firmly establish yourself as top dog and don't tolerate any real aggression.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/

Watch for bristling and quick, short snaps.  Immediately correct which ever dog did it.  Perhaps a cooling off separation.  As they mature, a serious fight between a Pit Bull and a Great Dane won't be pretty.  I hope you aren't planning on keeping 2 intact males together.

You are sure it is serious?  Sometimes play can look like they are trying to kill each other.  Here is a link to a picture of a Shepherd I had enjoying a visit from another puppy, http://www.photolocker.net/images/Labman/gretchenandellaplaying.jpg
